5 Mistakes to Avoid When Hiring a Web Designer in Singapore

So, you’re looking to hire a web designer to create the look and feel for your website. Whether you’re looking to refresh what you currently have, or develop a brand new site, here are 5 mistakes you want to avoid when looking for a web design agency.

web design

1. Not knowing what you want and what you don’t

Web designers are specialists, not mind-readers. While a good and experienced designer will be up-to-date with what current trends are in web design, they cannot produce something with everything you want without input from you. A quick way to let your chosen web designer know what you want is to compile a list of websites with designs and features you like – and designs and features you don’t.  Going through the websites will be an efficient method of conveying what you want to your designers

2. Choosing a designer or agency based purely on their design portfolio

Of course a designer’s portfolio is important! You’re hiring them to do your web page design after all. However, you’ve got to make sure that the web designer you’re thinking of hiring has experience designing for your chosen content management system (CMS). If you’re not sure what CMS you want to use, ask the designer which CMS they have designed for and which they recommend. They should be able to tell you the pros and cons of each CMS, and have some basic knowledge of how to create search engine optimization (SEO) and mobile friendly design.

3. Not having a realistic budget or timeline

I’m sure you’ve heard this adage – fast, cheap and good: choose two. If your project is massive and complicated, temper your expectations with regards to price and time. If your budget is absolute, then you’ve got to be more flexible with regards to features. Want the web designer to rush your project? Expect to pay for overtime. By being reasonable about your budget and timeline, you’ll be more likely to have a smooth experience with the vendor you’ve chosen.

4. Not asking all the questions you have

If you don’t have a background in web design, you might be overwhelmed by all the terms and IT jargon. Don’t hesitate to ask the web design agency to clarify any terms you aren’t sure of! This is the only way to eliminate nasty surprises when you receive the final product.

5. Not making sure you own the design and content

It is common industry practice to sign over the intellectual property rights to your website, while retaining the right to showcase your project in the web designer’s portfolio. Be sure that you own the website – this will reduce any chances of not getting investment capital should you choose to sell your business in the future.

And there you have it! 5 mistakes that you should avoid whether you’re hiring a freelance web designer or a web design company in Singapore.
