Guidelines To A Successful Website Design

It takes a creative mind to be able to come up with something really attractive. Most of the people are visual—we pay more attention to the appearance of something, especially if we see it on the very first glance.

Designing your website is the most crucial thing to consider. Whatever the outcome might be, it would all boil down to one single question—how do you like your website to look like?

If you already have an answer to that question then most probably, you are ready to design your website. But before your creative juices flow, you must keep in mind that less is more.

In almost all aspects of life, it is much better if we opt for the lighter side. However, it would still depend on the kind of product / service you are offering. For example, if you are selling food and beverages, you might want to use shades of yellow, red, and/or orange, and so on and so forth.

Some of us want to follow a certain set of rules in order to place themselves on the safe side, while some of us want to follow THEIR own set of rules because they trust their own creativity and their own sense of judgment.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION / HOME PAGE

Basically, this will be the backbone of your website. Your site’s Home page URL should be appealing and professional-looking at the same time. For example, you would not want to use slang words, or long sentences on your URL as the user will have a hard time memorizing it.

You should also know who your target audiences are. If you are doing a business for children, then you would want to put a little fewer words and more images and cute stuff on your background information page.

PAGE LAYOUT

Naturally, a user tends to get captured with how your website appears in their eyes. They would not probably waste their time checking out the rest of your website’s contents if they did not want the layout of your site in the first place.

Your logo should always appear on every page and remember to put it on the upper left side of your site because that’s where people usually land a gaze first before anywhere else.

To get the user’s full attention and to convert the attention they gave to sales, you should remember these: Repetition, Contrast, Proximity, and Alignment.

BROWSER COMPATIBILITY

Who would want their website to be unavailable to some browsers? Right, no one. So better make sure that your site can be viewed on current versions of Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome, Opera, and Safari.

And since almost all, if not all, of us, already own a smartphone, you should also make sure that your website will be mobile-friendly (includes tablets; Android or Apple).

COLOR AND GRAPHICS

Use the right colors and never ever exaggerate how your website will look like. You can use a maximum of three or four colors and you have to use them consistently and appropriately.

Do not be afraid to use graphics because they give life to your site. Maybe someone might have told you that graphics slow download time but that’s obviously not true because graphics are optimized.

FUNCTIONALITY

Your website will exist because it should exist; it should not be stagnant. In other words, all internal and external hyperlinks should be working; all tabs should be clickable. You will need a lot of time to review all the links and clickable buttons to make sure you did not miss anything, good luck with that! Also, make sure that no JavaScript errors are generated.

Whatever choice we make or chances we take, in the end, you have to think about the needs and the wants of your potential client.
